The establishment of the District Employment Office, Salem was sanctioned in GO MS No. 302 Labour and Employment Department dated: 27.06.1969.

This office started function on July 1969.  The District Employment Office, Salem implements all the major programmes of the Department such as Vocational Guidance Programme, Special Cell for Physically Handicapped, Collection of Employment Market Information from both Public and Private Sector, quarterly in E.R. I. forms and bionnly in ER.II forms etc. and a special section for compulsory notification of vacancies. This is the only office which collect Employement Market information once in a quarter.


The normal functions of the Employment Exchange is registration of candidates and renewal of registration and placement of job seekers.  One of the Special programme of this office is the Private Placement meet. This is the first office, in the entire State of  Tamil Nadu to organize Private placement meet. This is done regularly on the second Friday of every month. As a result of this free service, private employers and candidates meet regularly and recruitment is being done. More than 1500 candidates have been placed in private sector so far.


The Study circle is functioning from November 2001 which is sanctioned by the Government of Tamil Nadu in Go Ms. No. 138 Labour and Employment (R) dated: 4.10.2001 with the object of the job seekers, those who are preparing for all competitive examinations like TNPSC, UPSC, SSC, TRB, LIC, GIC, RBI, BSRB, Entrance examinations for entering Medical Colleges as well as Engineering Colleges etc.  Preference is being offered to the downtrodden people  as well as rural area candidates.  The Government allotted Rs. 60,000/- per year for the purchase of reference books for all competitive examinations and conducting Coaching classes etc. There are 20 persons were placed in Government jobs so far. At present Study Circle have been inaugurated in every Panchayat Union Offices in Salem District. There are twenty blocks and all these blocks have study circle. This has gone a long way in helping the rural youth to get the latest information regarding competitive examinations. So also, the books available at study  enrich the rural youth and enable them to come to along with other urban counter part.


All the candidates should renew the registration once in three years.  For registration they should prove their residence through ration card.  Those who are unable to renew their registration once in three years may condone their renewal after the lapse of 18 months of their original renewal time. But they should approach the office within the period of 18 months. This is the special  concession given by the Government of Tamil Nadu to the job seekers. Special concession has also been given to the candidates  those who have not renewed their registration in 2001 and 2002. More than 3500 candidates have been benefited by this special concession.


15 totally  blind candidates are being benefited by this scheme.  So far 28,800 rupees have been spent as unemployment relief during the financial year 2002-2003. 10 candidates are newly identified for the year 2003 - 2004. Both eye Blind candidates those are registered their name and waiting in the live register of the employment office for more than year are eligible to avail this relief. 


36,137 candidates details are so far been computerised out of 2,17,214 candidates available in the Live Register of this office.  The remaining candidates details are being computerised. However the day to day functions like Registration, Renewal, issuing of identity card to the candidates, preparing of registration book records, renewal log book, sponsoring candidates lists to the employers, preparing of Employment Market  Information periodicals, all periodicals etc. are being prepared through computer this office.
